Lyric Writing 101: Part 3

This is Part three of my Lyric Writing guide. Here you will learn how to accompany words by using samples and ghost songs.

AUTHORS NOTE: I don’t personally use this method of song writing. I don’t write rap music and don’t listen to enough of this form to have a deeper understanding of the writing process. I do, however, use a slightly different technique that I will try to explain in the Hints and Tips section of this article. What you will find below is my observations of this form of writing. If you do find any errors in my explanation please let me know and I’ll edit accordingly.

What is it?

Sampling refers to the taking of a portion of an already established track and using it as the framework for a new song. This is generally used to serve as the foundation for a rap vocal. There are actually two styles of sampling:

1) The most popular form of sampling takes a part of a track, hence the name ’sample’. It usually takes a specific beat from a song [most common samples are taken from drum or bass tracks], though you can use a ‘vocal’ sample for your “new” song.

* For an example of sampling just listen to any rap, dance or rave song, they all make use of samples.

* For an example of vocal sampling, take a look at Eminem’s song “Stan”. It uses a vocal sample from Dido’s song “Thank-you”.

2) The second kind of sampling is not as commonly used. It generally takes the entire melodic track of a pre-existing song and creates a completely new lyric for the song. This form of sampling is also known as a ghost song/track. This form of song writing should not be mistaken for alternate lyrics, as you need to totally disregard the lyrical arrangement of the song and focus on the remaining melody.

* The Puff Daddy song “Come With Me” from the Godzilla soundtrack is a sample, or ghost song, of Led Zepplin’s “Kashmir”. You will notice that the lyrical arrangement of the original song has been completely abandoned in this ‘new’ track, which is the main difference between a ghost song and alternate lyrics.

* The Limp Bizkit song “Take A Look Around” is a slightly different style of a ghost song. It takes its sample from a melodic piece, the most well known part of the Mission Impossible theme. If I remember correctly they were actually commissioned to ‘write’ this song. This serves as a reminder that any kind of melody can be adapted to use for a song.

Why use ghost songs

We all know that sampling is mainly used in rap, dance and techno music. Reasons for this vary, and I’m not entirely sure as to the exact reasoning for it. I don’t generally listen to these styles of music, I don’t write it, so I can’t honestly comment on that aspect of sampling. I can, however, tell you about the use of these techniques.

Many inexperienced songwriters make the mistake of trying to write lyrics without music. I can’t stress enough how important it is to work with a tune when writing lyrics. If you don’t work with a tune, it will show. The inability to play a musical instrument is no excuse, that is what ghost songs are for.

Getting Started

This section will deal solely with ghost songs as I’ve stated before, I don’t know enough about this form of song writing to comment effectively on it.

First you will need to find a song, choose one that you are comfortable with and preferably one in a genre you are familiar with. Try to pick a song whose lyrics you don’t know by heart, it will make it easier to ignore the lyric arrangement. Play this song until you are familiar with the melody and can hum it to yourself.

Remember: You need to ignore the lyrical portion of this song, if possible get a copy of just the melodic arrangement. If you don’t think that you can ignore the lyrics make a recording of the music yourself, if you don’t play an instrument see if a friend can do it for you.

What are you going to write about? It is important that you have a clear idea of what you want to say in your song. What do you want to say? What message do you want to leave the listener to leave with? Jot down any ideas or thoughts that occur. Try using the word association exercises found in Part 1 of this series to help extend on your ideas.

Start to feel the music, add some lyrics to places you feel comfortable doing so. If need be just sing “la la la” [or something similar] where you feel lyrics need to go, you can always add the actual lyrics at a later point in date. What you are doing here is starting the lyrical arrangement, play around with it see what fits, what doesn’t. Don’t expect it to be perfect the first time, there is nothing wrong with trial and error. Don’t forget to keep the tune in your head or play it often to ensure that your lyrics follow the basic beat of the track.

As with I’ve stated before, I can’t give you the exact formula to writing lyrics. It is a personal thing, everyone is different in how they write. Everyone has their own unique styles and methods. If you have attempted to write alternate lyrics you will have an understanding of how to combine your words with a melody. You will need to apply this knowledge to your ghost song. Read over the Alternate Lyrics article to refresh your memory and keep some of these pointers in mind.

Hints and Tips

# Try to match what you what to say [i.e. your lyrics] with the music. For example if you are writing a happy, upbeat song, you will need to find music that has a faster tempo [speed/beat] than that of a sad song or a ballad.

# You don’t need to keep the ghost song exactly as is. If there is a specific part you would like to keep over the rest of the song, change an instrument or make the melody sound ‘heavier’ or ’softer’ - then by all means do it. Play around with the drums and bass, if the ghost song ends up becoming a normal sample or disappears completely, that’s okay - there is nothing wrong with that. All it shows is your greater understanding and advancement in song writing.

* — * For example the Guns n’ Roses song “Sweet Child of Mine” underwent a drastic change when it was covered by Sheryl Crow [from rock to acoustic]. This example is not a ghost song but a cover. It is, however, an example of how you can go about altering a melody. Other examples of this can be found in Part 1 of the series.

# Your sample does not have to come from a well know or successful track. Any song you feel is right to work with is a possibility, whether it comes from an obscure b-side track by a relatively unheard of band or even a sample of one of your own existing songs

# Want to try something different? There are many software programs available that are capable of generating melody and rhythm tracks for you. Many of these programs are either downloadable from the ‘net or have free demos available for you to use.

* — * Ejay is a program specifically designed for rap, dance and rave music, though it can easily be applied to the basics of other musical genres to give you a feel for the melody or beat of a song in order to get the lyrics started. You are also able to download a variety of new samples from the website to expand on the existing choices [visit http://www.ejay.com to take a look at the program]. This is only one program; there are others out there if you are willing to look for them.

# As I stated at the beginning of this article, I don’t exactly use ghost songs. What I use is a similar process but it doesn’t have an actual track or beat for you to listen and follow. It is a harder technique and probably shouldn’t be attempted unless you have a deeper understanding of how music is put together or are able to create a tune in your own head. I’m not entirely sure if I can explain it correctly or coherently but I’ll try my best [let me know if you don’t understand it]

How does it work? Say, for example, I want to write a song in the vein of a Korn song. Instead of finding a song by this artist I could use as a ghost track [or even sample their work] I call to mind how their songs sound while I write the lyrics for my song. This can really only work properly if you are able to create and hold a tune in your head while working and applying it to the draft to your lyric.

This form of song writing gives you a little more freedom then samples or ghost tracks when it comes time to create/add the instrumental background to your song. By using this technique you allow yourself the freedom to mix different genres together or change the basic sound of the song with minimal effort. Even though I started with the basic sound of a Korn track, I have the freedom to expand on the idea. The final result may have more of a Linkin Park sound or more of a Marilyn Manson sound to it, possibly even a mixed of all these artists. This song writing technique allows you to explore and find your own voice. Sometimes the lyric portion of the song will need some altering, other times not, it all really depends on how the music alters from the original idea.

* — * For example, my piece Forsaken [http://www2.writing.com/main/view_item/item_id/716277] was written using this technique. Although it started [and has thus far remained] heavily influenced by Disturbed and Korn, there is the possibility that it may change slightly from this form. I have been told by some people that they felt it may have been more in the vein of Creed or possibly a mixture of the two styles, which is a drastic change from the original idea/style of the song. Personally, I don’t see that connection but it shows how genre swapping can occur.

* * * * * * * * * *

The inability to play an instrument should not affect you song writing abilities. By using a ghost song or sample you are able to create a basic framework for your song. This track does not necessarily mean that it is the final draft of your song, it may simply be a rough draft, or a guide for how the lyric portion should sound. The final ‘draft’ of the song may not occur until much later when you collaborate with your band or another artist who you are working with. As with any sort of writing, re-writes are inevitable. Don’t expect your work to be ‘perfect’ first time round.

As with alternate lyrics, the use of sampling and ghost songs can be an excellent tool for learning the techniques of song writing. By utilizing these two forms of song writing, you should be able to see how to accompany words with music. When you feel comfortable enough with these two forms of song writing try using my form of a ghost track or even try your hand at writing your own music [or collaborate with a friend].

Look out for Part 4 of this series where you will learn about hooks and other writing tips for when you start to write.

Tourette’s Syndrome Helped by Video Dialogue

Tourette’s syndrome is a neurological movement disorder named after Georges Gilles de la Tourette, the French physician that first described it. Gilles de la Tourette’s first interest was in the hyperstartle syndrome that was reported in some patients who would startle excessively in reaction to a surprising stimulus. If they were given a verbal command at the same time they would automatically obey the command, often repeating it simultaneously (echolalia). He did not find patients with hyperstartle but did collect a group of patients with tics and abnormal vocalizations.

He described a genetic syndrome of tics and echolalia (the repetition of words or phrases uttered by others) that began in childhood and affected males more often than females. The simple motor tics consist of movements such as eye blinking, mouth twitching, eye turning, head jerking, shoulder shrugging, hand jerking, sudden tightening of stomach muscles, and kicking movements. Many complex motor tics such as squatting, hopping backward, or spinning around while walking give the appearance of having a purpose

Some complex vocal tics seem to express a mind of their own devoted to humiliating the person. Coprolalia, the utterance of obscene or objectionable words and phrases and copropraxia, making involuntary obscene gestures, often appear to be deliberate self-abasement. Complex motor tics may appear self-abusive or self-mutilating.

The seemingly intentional behavior of complex tics may represent a variant of dissociation that is entirely due to a physical pathology. Dissociative symptoms usually express mental disorders and one such condition, dissociative identity disorder (DID), shows alterations of identity that often generate deliberate self-abasement and self-mutilation. Self-abusing behavior in DID patients can be addressed by a method of dialogue between parts of the person. These individuals often spontaneously experience inner dialogue with their parts. If this dialogue is externalized the self-abusing behavior can be discussed and negotiated toward resolution. This can be done by written dialogue with each participant taking turns and not interrupting. Video dialogue in which the messages are recorded and replayed in turn is not as easy but can be more effective.

Even though the dissociation of Tourette’s arises from a physical disorder the unwanted behavior can be discussed and subjected to negotiation between the person and the brain’s self-abusing agent. The following case example used video dialogue.

Case Example:
This 28-year-old woman had suffered from symptoms of Tourette’s syndrome since early childhood but it was not diagnosed until age 24 because her tic symptoms were attributed to epilepsy. She had serious convulsions (grand mal and petit mal) that were not controlled until she was finally put on anti-convulsant medication at age 19. Her Tourette’s syndrome was manifested as compulsive blinking of her eyes, gritting of her teeth, nasal sniffing and snorting, episodes of throwing objects (dinner plates) and since age 13 or 14 episodes of explosive anger. In recent years she had symptoms of head bobbing and hitting her head with her right hand.

She denied hearing voices but she readily agreed to a video dialogue with the part of herself that could control the tics. In the video dialogue she heard a male voice. When she spoke for the voice it sounded very reasonable and benign and agreed to help her limit the tics to evening hours when she was home. She reported a 50% reduction in tics following the first video dialogue. She was unable to come to the clinic regularly due to distance and transportation problems but she came in every few weeks or months whenever her symptoms worsened for refresher dialogues.

Some patients with Tourette’s cannot get a response from another part in the externalized dialogue. This procedure cannot be expected to cure Tourette’s but it may prove to be a useful way to gain amelioration.

Take Advantage of the Thrill of the Capital’s Legendary Museums

London has in many opinions a few of the best museums on the entire planet in trueness it has many hundreds of museums & shows both huge & small. There are numerous to elect from but for obvious reasons specific ones are superior than others. A number of the most chic London museums to drop in at include the British Museum, Natural History and Science Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, Imperial War Museum & the National Maritime Museum.

The British Museum has lately opened again, but with an expensive repair & is normally considered as being the finest museum in the world where unimaginable three-thousand year old Egyptian Kings enjoy a considerably busier life after death than they considered. To be found in the Centre of the Capital this is still one of the top museums in The City to drop in at. There are stacks of exciting collections & galleries to take a look at, some that embrace the reading room & the recent African collection, which experts state is the world’s largest and most paramount in terms of range & quality with over 200,000 historical objects. Time Out has details on a whole range of London Attractions.

The Natural History and Science Museums are appropriate for either youth and adults. The Natural History Museum building is fabulous any dinosaur follower will simply relish getting lost in every part of the history that goes along with this spectacular museum.

The Science Museum is astonishing, very recent in terms of when new breakthroughs are found. There are a number of scientists at the museum testing authentic science experiments that you can be a subject of if you crave. There are bags of exciting hands on things to do for either adolescents and adults.

The Victoria & Albert museum also more regularly recognised as the V&A is a gigantic museum filled to the top with customs. It’s worth a visit just for the cast quarters alone. The museum itself is free of charge to go in & is the world’s leading decorative and arts and design museum. The Imperial War Museum looks a lot at the experience of the imperial world war rather than its prosecution. Some amazing exhibitions like that of the “The Blitz” and “The Holocaust” are enormously heartbreaking.

All About GPS and How It Works

GPS or Global Positioning Systems are computer systems that use satellites in orbit around the globe to provide exact longitudinal and latitudinal position of the user. GPS units were originally designed by the Department of Defense for military purposes and are now used on the consumer level for day to day navigation. Some GPS units sell for less than $100.00 and as long as you have one and have a clear sight of the sky you will never be lost again. In fact most GPS receivers can pinpoint your location on the globe within about 50 feet. GPS units vary in price based on their quality and capabilities, so when shopping for one it is important to know what you are planning to use it for.

GPS systems are mostly used by consumers for two purposes, positioning and navigation. GPS units are placed on boats so boaters can have an idea of where they are in comparison to the shoreline. In cars they are more often equipped to provide directions to the driver from two different points. Some of the more expensive models come equipped with voice capabilities so that drivers don’t even have to take their eyes off the road. Many handheld models are sold to outdoor enthusiasts for camping, hunting and hiking. These handheld models also range in price based on their capabilities and if the display comes in color or not.

Most GPS units will also provide you with some standard and useful information…..

An Odometer (Distance you have traveled)
Time you have been traveling
A Speedometer (How fast you are currently traveling)
Average speed for the journey
A map of you trail so far
E.T.A (Estimated time of arrival)

GPS units use four satellites orbiting the globe to triangulate your position on earth and can do so with extreme accuracy. If you are constantly lost behind the wheel or spend a lot of time in the outdoors purchasing a GPS unit might be the right move for you.

Online Article Views and Search Rankings a Total Crap Shoot

Many people will tell you that there is a secret method to getting your articles to spider well in the search engines. They have theories of how to get the best rankings, which key words to use, which titles and best times to post your online press releases, articles, poems, stories or public relations. Well I am going to let you in on a little secret.

The whole thing and all these so-called tips of article marketing, titling and key wording are completely full of it. In fact if you will look at the articles of those who sell eBooks on how to best get your articles seen you will find their articles do not rate as well as your articles as a novice. So take all their volumes of advice and stuff it.

I have written 3050 articles and placed them online and my data sets show that something is a miss and many articles (same subject, similar titles and key words) get no play, while others posted nearly within the same week get more play immediately and over time. Many which have been optimized for best chance of search engine ranking do not get as many article views or rank as high in search engines as articles with no real effort to make them more visible to search engines.

Even online article submission sites, which treat every single article exactly same often find that it is quite interesting the number of article views on certain articles and how others fail. Am I saying such systems are a complete crapshoot? Am I saying why bother doing much of anything about it at all, just rely on beginners luck? Am I suggesting that one may as well let all the articles fly and throw darts at the wall? Yes, this is what I am saying. I am saying screw these so-called experts all competing for that perfect article placement.

One of my top articles for article views is; “Cancun Girls Gone Wild, Wilma Shows All” which is about Hurricane Wilma and the devastation to the resort towns of Cozemel and Cancun. Another is “How to do Window Tinting” so you see it is not so much about key wording as dumb luck or “luck of the draw” in page spidering. Now then, what makes my comments better than the experts? Well, I have read everything they have to say, tried their techniques and watched the results on my articles and I have written more articles than anyone else on the Internet and well, I ought to know.

About the only worthy theory I have heard is the “Long Tail Theory” which is picking not the top 1-5 key words but concentrate on the 5-10 key words of a certain subject and of course put in the important key words too, but by being sure to contain the lesser key words that no one else is competing for, you will get more article views. My average article views are way up now and I am just shy of 800,000 article views on one site alone. So think on this and the reality, screw the experts they are full of crap and will cost you time and money.

Enterprise Architecture Inputs

Enterprise architecture involves the broad decisions to be made by an organization in the process of creating an organizational information support system. The process of implementing enterprise architecture has now become an inevitable part of present-day business. The inputs of enterprise architecture can dynamically change the business environment in many ways, because basically, it is a blueprint that integrates process and goals in a business enterprise. Thus, it provides vital inputs to components of the business process like intellectual capital, organizational learning, strategic planning, organizational design, competitive advantage, business process reengineering, and systems delivery.

In old days money wielded the power in an industry, as it was necessary to erect giant structures and owning money was the primary requisite to venture into business. With the growth of banking institutions in the 30s, the concept of owning money changed as banks, came to help the businessperson. Venture capital also changed the scenario drastically. Thus came a new breed of professional who managed the businesses, taking the powers from the share holders. But today the entire scenario has changed. The enterprises of the information age thrive on the knowledge of the worker, or the intellectual capital. The intellectual capital is useless if it cannot be exploited. Enterprise architecture inputs can help in effectively exploiting the intellectual capital.

Learning has become an inevitable part of new businesses, because of their greater complexity. Enterprise architecture can help to record the knowledge inputs generated in all the vital points that control the enterprise, such as the visions, goals, strategies, governance principles and models; business terms, organization structures; processes and data; application systems and technical infrastructure.

The information age has not only contributed to change in the business environment, but also to the nature of the change. The business strategy has changed from a plan to an adaptive design that makes a quick response to the controlling factors of the enterprise. Enterprise architecture incorporates the guidelines and methods for a adaptive design.

Organizational design is the other factor that makes use of the knowledge-building and analyzing mechanisms of the enterprise architecture. Adaptive enterprise design, which prescribes a firm-specific governance mechanism, has become important for present-day business enterprises. Enterprise architecture can help with necessary knowledge inputs. It can also help in building modern concepts like manage-by-wire that builds mechanisms for sensing and responding to changes in the market many times faster than the competition.

Mass customization and product differentiation have become the key words for the successful modern day enterprise. In such enterprises where the information content of the product is high, enterprise architecture can assist in bringing down the cost involved in product differentiation. The greatest input enterprise architecture can provide is in business process reengineering, which itself is a radical rethinking of the business to achieve better levels of performance.

Similarly, the components in systems delivery, such as systems architecture, technical architecture, data and information architecture, can be very well-integrated through enterprise architecture.

The Death of Product Packaging as We Know It.

It used to be you that if you had a great product you put it in a package and voila! . . .someone would come along and buy it. That is not the case any more. The package not only has to protect the product and allow for its tracking, it has to sell it too. Most importantly, the package has to capture someone’s attention in less than three seconds.

Consider the last time you went shopping. Were there any new
products that jumped at you off the shelves? With smart packaging there is an embedded chip that says “buy me” every time someone walks past your product. Seriously, that will happen in the future, but right now smart packaging is confined to a few interesting innovations.

What smart packaging innovations will impact you and your
product? It depends not only upon your target demographic but
where you plan to sell your product. Packaging 101 simply doesn’t make the grade any more.

Ask yourself some important questions that will help you build
your package brand.

Who is your buyer?
How old is your buyer?
Where does your buyer shop?
How often do they shop?
What features are they looking for in your product packaging?
What is the most important aspect of your product package that
will appeal to the buyer?

Will my package have to persuade people to buy it?
Can your package be easily compromised, tampered with or
counterfeited?

This should get you started thinking about who you are packaging your product for and their expectations. No matter who the ultimate customer is, the package has to “sell” them on buying your product. If you haven’t taken the time to “think like a customer” your product won’t be flying off the shelf. It will be dying on the shelf!

The Right Way to Join Affiliate Programs & Why

Why would webmasters want to join an affiliate program? The first idea is for money. Many affiliate programs offer a percentage of the profits (rather a commission) for each sale or lead generated. Other reasons webmasters join these programs is to offer their userbase more quality products and options to improve their life or business. Even if you run the best website or have the best content, there are many other quality products you could offer your users.

But which of the affiliate programs are good? I have tested many of them on hundreds of websites. The answer? They are all good! But it depends on a few factors. The first is how much or how invasive you wish to make advertising on your website. I could load up a website with many banners, ads and popups. Do you think the user will return? Most likely not. Do you think they will recommend the site to their friend? No. So you have to take a combination of what you want and what the average user will accept. Besides this, the worst thing you can do is offer too many choices. Think about it. Say you were a user going to your site looking for information. Now look at what you have going on at your website. Popups? Banners? Flashing banners? Music? Exit Popups? Active X?? Would you like to visit your own site as a user? See what I am getting at. Most webmasters have one big mistake. I suffered from this for years. Webmasters think like webmasters, not users. My golden rule as a Webmaster is: I must think like a user. Underline that and say it aloud.

Once you understand what users want, focus on applying to several affiliate programs. Azoogleads is an affiliate program offering hundreds of different kinds of offers. The key I have found is to really sit and thin k before you put any ad on your site. Say the golden rule: I must think like a user. What do users want to see? Users are looking for information and especially fresh information. So are search engines (covered in another article). Give them their content but while they are at it.. why not show them a few other complimentary items/ads/offers. Do not make it overwhelming. Make is simple. One banner. One text ad. If you cannot stick to one ad, then please use a banner/ad rotator! I use these on my sites very effectively.

Another company is CJ.com . Many top level companies advertise through CJ.com so the offers are lucrative and quality.

Google has one of the best ad systems on the Internet today. It is called AdSense and it is very simple to use but very well designed. Adsense uses Google technology to show highly relevant ads on your site to your users. This is very important as you do not want dog biscuit ads shown on your lawnmower website. The targeted Adsense ads will allow you to see ads (almost always) specific to your site. The code you place on your webpage reads what is on your page and shows the most relevant ads possible. It is truly a great system and profitable too!

Some of the better affiliate programs I have used can be found on http://affiliateprogramhelp101.com/programs.php

Gaming Houses Selling Gaming — What You Must Know Concerning It All

The bother of having to drive to a offline gambler’s den makes it recommendable to forget about it if you can avoid it. Those traffic jams, the bother, and chores this entails won’t compensate the exertion solely for the prospect of playing at offline gambler’s den, all the same, should you happen to be the sort of guy who is quite frenetic about gaming halls then heading for online card-playing is surely an alternate option.

There’s no necessity to abandon the comfort of your home to try your hand at online poker or other preferred games for the simple reason that everything can be done from your home office if you have a computer and broadband Internet access. Though allowing for that, don’t hold your breath too soon because there’s a good number of prompts that you must learn about online poker or other preferred games, particularly so if you are a beginner in this department. OK, soften those hormones to mull over what follows. Here is my terse rough that was written up to delineate what to observe if you’re unearthing a reputable online poker or other preferred games webpage.

The topmost thing that I as a quick Internet high roller should definitely hunt for is an online poker or other preferred games Web site of the category capable of promoting high winning odds. Make sure that the online poker or other preferred games Web site has partnered with a reputable auditor so as to audit the specific online wager’s pay-out odds in a verifiable manner. This may be productive to determine the moolah you are willing to hazard in the course of your expected extravaganza will actually warrant it all.

Always ascertain that the virtual card-playing Web site is actually licensed, for instance by investigating the official warrant on the casino site. Should it prove impossible to locate any official warrant on a preferred virtual card-playing Web site, don’t attempt to gamble with that webpage.

Moreover, another advice would be to test the odds for beginners with modest amounts in lieu of fritter more than does you good on the fly. First of all, check the operability of this particular virtual card-playing outfit before daring to risk some severe adversity, particularly so in terms of money… And now, the last most vital tip about virtual gambling.
