In the near future we could see mobile operators looking at selling extra bandwidth in app stores says The Register, a popular news website.

Most cellular operators’ traffic is governed by data and in case of 3UK, it was up to 94 percent of its traffic. Though the traffic is high the revenue generated by data traffic only amounted to 20 percent and it does not generate substantial revenue for most providers.

Mobile operators can however increase the price of mobile data packages. But most companies have not resorted to this option as they fear losing new customers. To cope with the situation they have devised creative ways to make more money.

3UK has devised a scheme to charge customers for priority network access as well as subscriptions to data applications. By using this tactic it provides customers on a higher tariff plan priority access to their network especially if there is traffic congestion.

A specialist company dealing in data billing, Volubill, stated that other cellular providers would soon follow 3UK. It also stated that it had ten different cellular operators who were exploring ways and means to implement tiered charging. They also added that app stores proved to be the most popular option among service providers as they planned to sell extra bandwidth along with the apps. This would ensure that customers would have the bandwidth required to run that specific application.
