Direct Sales for Nexus One- Google
Andy Rubin, Vice President Engineering at Google, has announced the shift to direct sales for the company’s recent Nexus One product line. The announcement comes just months after the product was launched in January this year with sales enabled through the online store.
Company sources say that the low demand for the product has encouraged the top management to reconsider keeping the online sales option alive. In the European markets, the product is sold directly through retail outlets. This arrangement is the outcome of a tie up with Vodafone there. A similar strategy will soon be adopted elsewhere
Critics also blame the less than satisfactory customer support for the poor sales of the Nexus One. Google believes that this issue can be addressed more effectively with a retail sales approach.
Although the Nexus One sales have failed to make a mark, the Android OS platform which supports the technology used in the handset has been remarkably successful. Many brands have opted to simulate the Android platform for use with their own products, proving that it has found widespread acceptance as viable technology. Google has taken pains to point out that the global acceptance of Android has well exceeded the predictions. They believe that this is clear evidence that with the implementation of the retail sales strategy, the Nexus One sales will also begin to soar. It is believed that once the retail sales supply has been established well, the online sales option will be withdrawn.
